The Badlands were once a sea. Living in the sea were clams, snails and crabs. As you look at the video you will see grey colored rocks which were the bottom of the sea. Buried in this rock are fossils. Fossils are the skeltons or bones of animals that lived long ago in the sea.
Many years passed, millions of years, and the sea disappeared. Gigantic plates, within the earth, like what happened in the Tetons, began to push and forced mountains to rise. As the land rose up, it pushed the water away. The sun and air touched the land and it became dry. Next, a different climate change happened and it started to rain. Then, there were bright green forests. Last, the landscape changed again as the rains stopped and the land dried. The forests disappeared and we have what we see today. The Badlands were part of the Great Plains. You can see some grass.
